PRESS RELEASE
Central Roadracing Association
July 6, 2011

For Immediate Release:

SCHMIDT DOMINATES DURING CRA ROUND THREE AT BRAINERD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

Christian Schmidt returned to his winning ways during the Central Roadracing Association’s round three, held on Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course, by winning 20 of the 28 races he entered and leaving the weekend with a massive lead in the overall championship. Schmidt came armed with a bevy of MomentumPhoto.net sponsored motorcycles and while many of his performances were inspiring, most of the results were somewhat expected. What wasn’t expected was engine problems on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 and the amazing rides that he put in on his borrowed (and mostly stock) Yamaha YZF-R6 he instead rode in the Unlimited races against faster 1,000cc machinery. He continually out-rode some very skilled riders on significantly faster machinery and was even able to take home a victory in the Unlimited class after a mesmerizing battle with teammate Zach Hughes ended a lap early when Hughes took some dirt samples outside of the very difficult turn 12. With a winning percentage of 71%, it’s clear that Schmidt had close to the perfect weekend. The only thing the massively talented rider could have done to make the weekend more memorable would be to throw in a 100mph highside while landing a victory wheelie, right? Well, wouldn’t you know it, he did that too!!

Going into the weekend, all eyes were on the battle for Unlimited glory. Local AMA hero Tony Kasper was making his first 2011 appearance with the CRA on his Team Iron Horse BMW S1000RR. Kasper was a dominant force in 2010 and many expected the same result in 2011 now that he was armed with an additional 400cc. The man standing in his way was CRA legend Shane Keaveny. Keaveny also brought a new weapon to the 2011 fight in the form of a Honda CBR1000RR and was in no mood to roll over and let the AMA rider steal the show. In Sunday’s Unlimited Superbike showdown, Keaveny took the early lead and instantly started laying down his fastest laps ever around BIR’s Competition Course. Kasper responded likewise, laying down a new lap record of 1:36.287. With both riders pushing for the win, one would expect many “moments” as the riders pushed past the limits of their machinery and tires but both riders were smooth and calculated for the entire race. As the laps wound down, Kasper was consistently cutting small amounts out of Keaveny’s lead but, try as he might, he wasn’t able to close the gap to Keaveny enough to attempt a pass and he crossed the line .909 seconds behind his rival’s CBR1000RR.

As usual, the Ninja 250 class provided stupendous racing throughout the grid. Christian Schmidt checked out at the front of all six of the Ninja 250 races, but the battle for the remaining podium spots was always a hectic affair. The podium positions always came down to a battle between Alex Freeman, John Smrecek, Neal Krisher with the occasional addition of Jesse Nelson. The four of them swapped multiple positions on the last lap of virtually every race and more than one finish for second place had to be decided via the computer, with the closest finish seeing Freeman cross the line .025 seconds in front of Smrecek.

Finally, the performances of two young riders need to be pointed out. Fourteen year old Kaleb DeKeyrel put in rides that could teach many older competitors a few things. Kaleb won four races on his DeKeyrel Racing Moriwaki MD250H and completed his debut expert 600cc race aboard the Worldwide Machining & Welding Yamaha YZF-R6 in a very impressive fifth place. The other impressive ride came from local hot-shot, Cole Speer. Speer made a mid-season jump to the expert field prior to this race weekend and he proved to many seasoned riders that he was more than ready to run with the big dogs by constantly placing in the top-3 in the Middleweight and Heavyweight races. Look for big things in the future out of these two riders!

The CRA’s next event will be held on the Brainerd International Raceway Competition Course from August 5-7. This race weekend will feature a 3-hour endurance race so bring your friends up to watch or participate in the action!!
