Central Roadracing Association
June 15, 2011

For Immediate Release:

SCHMIDT WINS NINE RACES DURING THE CENTRAL ROADRACING ASSOCIATION ROUND 2 WEEKEND!

The Central Roadracing Association held their second race weekend of the season June 10-12. The weather conditions for the weekend were almost perfect, which was a very welcome change from the cold and wet conditions of the previous race weekend. Sunny skies and mild temperatures brought an unusually high number of racers to the track and was definitely a contributing factor in the most successful CRA event in recent years.

Christian Schmidt was one of the many outstanding performers of the weekend, bringing home nine checkered flags on his various MomentumPhoto.net backed machines. Among the brace of wins was the prestigious Framstad Cup, a tortoise vs. hare style race featuring bikes like Ninja 250’s competing against everything up to CBR1000RR’s and R1’s. Schmidt put the hammer down early on in the race and pulled off the victory by more than seven seconds over Aaron Anderson’s Yamaha R6.

What does it feel like to win the Framstad Cup? We asked our 2011 champ: “It’s crazy coming around turn 10 after the first lap and seeing some of your competition still sitting on grid. After being passed once by Shane Keaveny on his 1000 and knowing he was coming again really made me put my head down. I’m really proud to take the win in such a great event. I’d like to thank Mason Racing Tires, Chicken Hawk, Michelin, and Crush Hardware, for helping me get the great products I needed to compete. And of course Momentum Photo for making the bikes look so great.”

The “highlight” of the weekend occurred when 20-year old Colin Cowles suffered a vicious 140mph highside while exiting the famed Turn 1, the fastest right turn in the country. Cowles was knocked unconcious immediately and the force of the impact to his head was strong enough to break his Leatt neck brace. The “highlight” aspect of this crash came when Colin arrived at the track later that day nursing some minor roadrash, a concussion and some general stiffness – incredibly minor injuries for a Turn 1 crash which has a reputation for creating extensive recovery times. Colin and the CRA medical director attributed his escape from major injury to the safety precautions he took before he even hit the track.

The Middleweight and Heavyweight Novice battles seemed to always come down to two riders: Drew See and Cole Speer. See ended the weekend with seven wins, some of which were on a borrowed bike after mechanical issues forced him to park his, while Speer took home five. This looked to be a season-long battle between the two but Speer has decided to take his talents to the Expert field to continue his seamless transition to the world of 600cc racing after a year spent on a Kawasaki Ninja 650R.

June featured a new protagonist in the battle for Unlimited class glory in the form of Zach Hughes. With the class still being dominated by Shane Keaveny, Hughes stepped up his performance in a big way this past weekend forcing Keaveny to earn the win. In his second year on his R1, Hughes seems to be gelling very well with it and is expected to be a constant threat to Keaveny, and combining Hughes with the sudden resurgence of Nick Campbell should provide for some fireworks in the final three events of the year.

Speaking of fireworks, the CRA’s next event is July 1-3, the perfect time to take a long weekend and come to beautiful Central Minnesota to enjoy the July weather, amazing roadracing on the Brainerd International Raceway Competition Course (in addition to a massive car show and drag racing on the drag strip) and to celebrate the weekend with fireworks, and maybe even a few additional special events!
