Intro to racing
This is introductory information for anyone who would like to become a New Rider with the Central Roadracing Association. As a result of the successful completion of the New Rider School, riders may obtain a CRA Roadracing License. In order to clearly understand the process, please review all the information below. Also, check out our FAQ, which can answer most of your New Rider questions and is located right below this message!

NEW RIDER SCHOOL INFORMATION

Cost: You have options.
1. Pay $185 for the complete new rider package which includes the classroom, Friday practice, Friday instruction, your race license fee, annual membership, and the use of an AMB Transponder during your New Rider weekend.

2. Or pay $20 for just the classroom training which you may then use as a credit towards the full fee. (meaning you'll only have to pay $165 if you later decide to come racing with us)

This seminar provides new racers with all the pertinent information needed to become a racer. Our Chief Instructor will review CRA Rules and Regulations, bike prep, safety, and beginning roadracing. Make sure to bring pen and paper and be prepared to take notes! At the end of the seminar, new riders will be given a test, in which new riders must pass in order to attend the on-track session. If you want a headstart, check out the Rulebook on-line and review every page! The test will be given following the New Rider Classroom!

New Riders are also welcome to bring crew members, friends, and family who may be interested in learning more about the CRA in general!

If you are unable to attend this seminar, please email Nick Campbell (see Contacts page).

Prior to the New Rider Seminar, our Technical Inspector will be available to look at bikes and help new riders to assure you that your bike is race ready. One less thing to worry about during your first weekend at the track! While attending our seminar, please be prepared to fill out your membership form as well. Along with the seminar, new riders will need to partake in 1 on-track session.

On-track sessions are scheduled for:

Riders must complete the seminar along with passing one on-track session in order to receive a CRA Racing License. Be prepared for your on-track session, both physically and mentally, along with your bike being "race-ready!" On the day of the track-session, you will need to have your bike inspected by our technical inspector in the tech barn or designated area. You are able to do this on Thursday night or Friday morning. Next, riders will meet in the classroom with Chief New Rider Instructor, Mark Miller. Next, riders will take a tour ride around the track by vehicle to view the track. Shortly after, riders will be placed into small groups and given an instructor for the day and you are “on the track!” At the end of the day, new riders will partake in a New Rider Race, racing against your fellow new riders! Pass all of this and you are on your way to becoming a licensed racer!

SATURDAY & SUNDAY OF YOUR FIRST WEEKEND

After completing the seminar and the on-track session, new riders will be required to volunteer as a corner worker during an entire Trophy Dash, which take places on Saturday afternoon. As a result of volunteering, new riders will learn more about roadracing from the perspective of a corner worker (invaluable). During your first weekend, new riders may enter as many races as they like (except Trophy Dashes), although riders may not bump up classes (ie middleweight racer may not race in heavyweight). Not sure what class(es) your bike qualifies for? Click the link at the top of the page the says, "What Class Is My Bike Eligible To Race In?". This will help guide you as to what races to sign up for during the registration period.

Have your bike "Race Ready," Meaning have the entire bike wire tied and in great working condition. Please review our How to Wire Tie section of our website! See the CRA Rulebook at the top of this page on what needs to be wire tied and which bikes race in which races and so on. Also check out Basic Bike Preparation, & Handling the Heat.

In order to become a licensed racer, you must be ready physically and mentally. Check out How to become a Motorcycle Racer

Also, it is crucial for new riders to be physically ready, in doing this, remember to drink lots of water, up to 2-3 gallons of water per day! Applicants that are less than 18 years of age must provide a notarized copy of the CRA minor license release form signed by their parent or guardian. Licensing of minors requires the approval of the Chief Steward.
